To listen well in school, a person must use the following strategies: These are required for him or her to listen well in school.

  1. Keep eye contact with your teacher. Eye contact helps you stay focused on the subject and engages you in the lesson.
  2. You should not interrupt the teacher when he/she is teaching.
  3. Avoid distractions and sit still. Don’t let your mind wander or get distracted by someone shuffling papers around you. If the classroom is too cold or hot, you should try to fix it as soon as possible.
  4. Keep active in class by following the instructions and asking questions after the teacher is done talking. What does this lesson have in common with the lessons I’ve just completed? How does this lesson get organized?
  5. Listening is a mental challenge. This will allow you to concentrate on the speaker’s words and then process them into notes.
  6. Avoid emotional involvement and focus on the content, not the delivery. When you become too emotionally involved in listening, it is more likely that you will hear what you want rather than what is being taught. Keep your eyes open and be objective. Don’t count how often the teacher has removed a threat within 15 minutes.
  7. Use the gap between your speech and thought rates to learn from the teacher. You can think faster than the teacher can talk. Keep your mind occupied and focused on the message.
