CHARACTERISTICS FOR WEEDS
- Vegetative and sexual methods can be used to spread weeds.
- Even in adverse weather conditions, weeds can survive.
- The seeds produced by weeds are large.
- The weeds are persistent and aggressive in trampling.
- Some weeds can mature simultaneously with crops and are harvested together with the crop.
- The viability of most weed seeds is very long.
- They can live on any type of soil.
- The modified parts of weeds, like roots, stems, and leaves, help them survive.
WEED DISPERSAL
These agents have different methods of dispersing weeds.
- Wind: Weed seeds tend to have small, lightweight wings that favor wind dispersal. Aspiliaa Tridax.
- Water: Weed seeds may fall into moving water (flood), and land on farms can germinate them. Wild cotton, water lily.
- Both man and animal: Weed seeds can stick to animals’ skin and clothes. These weed seeds can be brushed away as they move around, such as Desmodium & Triumphetta.
- Explosive mechanism: The pods of dried dehiscent legumes break in sunny weather, scattering seeds, e.g., Centrosema, crotalaria, calapoganium.
EVALUATIOUN:She assesses the lesson by asking the following question:
- Define weed
- At least three characteristics of weeds should be outlined.
