Communalism is a social, political and economic system of administration through autonomous communities which allows collective ownership of property. Communalism is derived from the word “Commune” or “Community”. Communalism is the first most primitive and the simplest mode of production. In communal community, members pursue common goals like farming, building of houses, markets, roads, health centre, collectively. The community agreed that they should co-operate and come together to harness of everybody. Examples of countries or continents that practised communalism were Africa, China (Practised this system under the leadership of a man called TSE-TUNG).
One of the founding fathers of communalism Julius Nyerere of Tanzania maintained that communalism is like returning to traditional political practices where everybody was part of the government.
8 Features Of Communalism
1. There is collective ownership of the resources (that production is owned collectively).
2. Members share common culture and identity.
3. The society is classless as there is no room for exploitation.
4. There is collective ownership of property (Land).
5. There is co-operation among members in the Execution of developmental projects (ie each member of the community contributes to the development of the society).
6. Communal government is likened to self-government where public issues are raised and discussed openly.
7. The small community was said to be the main unit of government.
8. There is a strong relationship that exist among them.
