Billy Porter (born September 21, 1969) is an actor, singer, and author from the United States. [He earned renown as a Broadway performer before embarking on a solo career as a singer and actor after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama.
Porter’s performance as Lola in Kinky Boots earned him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2013. He says the role helped him tackle toxic masculinity by “breaking open” his feminine side. Porter also received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his performance in the show. Kinky Boots garnered Porter the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2014.
Porter was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards and won the 2019 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in the television series Pose, becoming the first gay black man to be nominated for and win an Emmy for lead acting in any category. He was named to Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most important people in 2020.
